Chad Thomas Johnston’s Nightmarriage is a whimsical memoir that explores the terrors of marriage and the perils of parenthood. Adapted from Johnston’s blog series of the same name, Nightmarriage proves that, when two people marry, their flaws tie the knot, too. In essays such as “My Wife, the Black Hole,” “Hearts and Jumper Cables,” “Knives and Wives,” “Honeymoonwalking (to Jail),” and “Blessed Are the Tentmakers,” Johnston weaves stories on his literary loom that are equal parts luminous and lunatic.
Writing as only a minister’s son with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can, Johnston has crafted an observational ode to both the blunders and wonders of wedlock, and his writing is punctuated accordingly with absurd alliteration, appalling puns, and madcap metaphors. Nightmarriage is a must-read for fans of David Sedaris, Robert Fulghum, and Anne Lamott.
While Johnston created the cover art himself, the interior of the book features original work by artists BARRR, Dan Billen, Ben Chlapek, Megan Frauenhoffer, Danny Joe Gibson, Mark Montgomery, and Darin M. White. The appendices of the book also include Twitter stream excerpts, recipes, artist information, and other miscellany from the world of Chad Thomas Johnston.

Nightmarriage Chad Thomas Johnston 9780615825557 Books Reviews
This guy is better than Erma (sorry, Erma). He makes me feel normal! Great humor and candor, not to mention visuals. Can't wait to read his take on parenthood. Btw, I want to thank the author for explaining about the time/space correlation to my car keys hiding in plain sight )
Chad - I can call him that because he's my friend - is a talented and quirky writer. He plays with language with such skill that it's both clear and also complex. And this book about how his young family came to be is both funny and charming. Definitely a great read for anyone who has blundered and blessed through marriage, child-rearing, and locking yourself out of the house.
For many people, the memories of early marriage and parenthood seem to smooth over with time. The quirks blur; the conflicts fade. Chad Thomas Johnston, still in the thick of it, catches all this ephemera while it's still fresh and lays it out in this humorous scrapbook of an essay collection, complete with art, recipes, and footnotes.
Despite the knives on the cover, this is not a dark book. The "night" in the title could just as well apply to the kind of incongruous middle-of-the-night observations that occur to you when you're up with a newborn Johnston has a knack for making unexpected connections. He's also adept at the funny turn of phrase. (His wife shuns a package of sprinkle-topped cookies because she "regards sprinkles with contempt, as though they might be flecks of Satan's dandruff.") A fun debut book full of affection and humor.
As a fellow parent of young children, and one who is in the beginning years of marriage, I found this book quite enjoyable. I laughed, sympathized, and felt the pure heartfelt emotion with which Chad writes. It's simultaneously lighthearted and full of life truths. Chad's writing style is almost whimsical and leaves you wanting more. I found myself wishing that every story was longer, and was pleasantly surprised when I found that I had devoured the whole book and was left wanting more.
Chad Thomas Johnston's book Nightmarriage is anything BUT a tome describing marriage as a bad dream. If the book is to be pegged at all (and this may be a disservice), it is a comic celebration of finding one's way through dimly lit first, and often unexpected, experiences in young marriage and child rearing. In a style reminiscent of David Sedaris, Chad allows us to join him on the journey of negotiating compromise and revelation in his marriage to Becki and the birth of their daughter. His writing is clever and creative, but never caustic - and this is perhaps the true gem of his abilities as a storyteller. I found myself smiling almost constantly as I read Nightmarriage - when I wasn't laughing aloud - but never at anyone's expense. And I was so immediately engaged, that I read the book in one sitting. There is a wide-eyed innocence in the way he weaves together this memoir, not unlike the tall tale of a precocious child. Johnston is clearly in touch with his inner precociousness, and the reader cannot help but be simultaneously amused and captivated. I eagerly await future antics of the Johnston clan.
Expecting at least a hint of cynicism in a book titled Nightmarriage, I found none. It reads more like the musings of a man surveying his life with wide-eyed wonder grateful, giddy, and even awed by how happily ever after he has lived since first meeting his wife. Especially charming is that, even while describing the quirks she possesses or the mishaps they encounter in the first few years together, it's clear that he considers himself the luckiest man alive to be married to her. Here's hoping this is just the first chapter of several.
This book is so beautiful, funny, and heartfelt. Chad and Becki's story is one that so many people can relate to in some way or another.
I read this book two days after the crazy coincidence described below. I laughed hysterically as I read, because simply it blew my mind how similar of situations that I find myself in. It made me smile to know that I am not the only person in this world who does these things!
Chad and Becki, this crazy coincidence is for you
My daughter, Bella, had an overnight with a family friend out at her grandma's house in the country. They just bought the place and I had not been there yet, so when she called after midnight, saying "mom, I want to come home." I punched the address into my phone's navigation system and Ben and I raced out the door just after midnight. We didn't realize we would be lost, completely misled by the app. (coincidence 1) It was so frustrating in the dark on those slippery country roads, because there had to be snow on the country roads, of course.
I had very little battery life, (coincidence 2) and Ben didn't bring his phone, so I panic as I call the adults of the house and ask for directions, frantically trying to remember their step by step directions.
We find the house, get my homesick daughter, and get home at 2 in the morning to find the door locked in a way it has never been locked (coincidence 3). When I moved into my house 5 1/2 years ago, I didn't get a key for the bottom doorknob lock, but it wasn't completely like your situation. Mine just "didn't work," whether it was in the locked position or not...or at least it didn't until Friday night. So we come back after 2 hours on the road, and I unlock the deadbolt, but the door isn't budging?? I'm so confused and I panic as I try to explain this strange scenario to Ben and Bella, who are freezing behind me wondering what the heck?
I tell them to hold tight, that I'll go in the back door and let them in. I get to the back door and I have the exact same problem, but this was my fault, as I have the same issue with the back door that you have with your house. I have no key for the doorknob lock, but it does lock, unlike the front door. I just usually do not have it locked, but of course the one time I need this door more than EVER, it is locked.
So, I come out from hopping my 7 foot fence, looking defeated, and my friend, Ben says, "you've got to be kidding, you don't have a key to EITHER of your doors?" looking at me in disbelief. (coincidence 4, as I'm sure you had those looks of disbelief, Chad!)
I won't go on and on about everything we tried, but in the end, Ben was able to use a credit card to get the doorknob lock unlatched as Bella stayed warm in the car.
So, to sum this all up, I then read your book 2 days after this incident...and it blew my mind that this had literally just happened to me, so I had to share!
This book is such a quick, fun read, and I highly suggest it for anyone, especially new families!
